The first residents of Wade, NC settled in the area next to the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. The railroad was originally chartered in 1835 and was fully completed by 1840. At the time, it was the longest railroad in the world. Eventually, the railroad was merged in with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad.
Wade, NC was named after a local businessman, N. G. Wade, who supplied the railroad with cross-ties. The town was incorporated in 1913 and began to grow as small businesses, a post office and a jail were built.
