Stedman, NC first had simple beginnings as a stagecoach house and post office built by John C. Blocker. The town was incorporated in 1917 and named after Charles Manly Stedman, the Major of the 44th North Carolina Infantry in the Civil War. After the war, Stedman studied and practiced law. He became involved in politics in 1880 and was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina in 1884. In 1910, Charles Stedman was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives. He served until his death in 1930 and was considered the last surviving veteran of the Civil War.
