Salemburg, NC became incorporated in 1905. The town was home to Southwood College. Founded in 1874, the institution was formed as an all-girls private school. One of the first principals was Marion Butler, who later went on to become a North Carolina politician and eventually Senator. The school and some of its original structures are still used today as the North Carolina Justice Academy.
Salemburg, NC is part of Sampson County, a region named after one of its first early European settlers. John Sampson served as the county militia’s Lieutenant Colonel and then Lieutenant General. It was his stepson that proposed the name Sampson when the county was created in 1784.
